What a functional trainer does

Two cable columns, any angle

A functional trainer is a cable machine with two independent columns, each with its own weight stack and a pulley carriage that slides from floor height to overhead. Set both carriages high for crossovers and pulldowns, low for curls, rows and kickbacks, or at chest height for presses, rotations and single-arm work. Because each side has its own stack, you can train one arm, both arms, or face away for pressing movements, all on one frame.

A single cable station or a lat pulldown runs one fixed path; a functional trainer gives you the whole range of heights and angles in a footprint about the size of a power rack. That is why it is often the first machine in a home gym after a rack and bench. For dedicated pulldown and row stations, see our lat pulldown machines.

Dual stacks and pull ratio

2:1 vs 1:1, and what the stack number means

  • Dual stack. Two stacks mean each handle moves its own weight, so the left and right sides work independently and two people can share the machine for single-arm work.
  • 2:1 ratio. The cable runs through a double pulley, so the load at the handle is about half the pinned weight and the cable travels twice as far. The Dual Stack Functional Trainer's 250 lb stacks deliver about 125 lb per handle, in finer steps, with the long cable travel that full-range movements need. Most home and studio functional trainers use 2:1.
  • 1:1 ratio. The pin number is the handle load; heavier per handle, shorter travel. The Assisted Chin Up and Dip runs 1:1, so the pin is the assistance in pounds.
  • All-in-One ratio. The All-in-One's two 220 lb stacks are listed without a stated ratio; ask us before ordering if you track loads.

The three machines

Standalone trainer, all-in-one, assisted chin and dip

Dual Stack Functional Trainer Home Gym, $2,999

The standalone cable trainer: two 250 lb stacks at 2:1, aluminum pulleys, thickened stack plates for lower noise, commercial-grade steel, and a frame designed to be taken apart and moved. Footprint and height are not published on the listing; ask us before ordering. One unit in stock; once it sells, it is sold out until restock.

All-in-One Smith Machine and Functional Trainer, $3,499

Two 220 lb cable stacks on the sides of a power rack with J-hooks and safety bars and a guided Smith bar. Ships with a 7 ft Olympic bar, a lat bar, a T-bar handle and tricep handles. About 72 by 82 by 88 inches. In stock. Also listed with our Smith machines.

Assisted Chin Up and Dip, $2,499

You kneel on a padded platform linked to a 250 lb counterbalance stack at 1:1; the pin sets how much of your body weight the machine lifts. Wide and narrow chin grips, dip handles, textured steps and slip-resistant handles. 62 by 48 by 91 inches, heavy-duty steel. In stock.

What to compare

Attachments, footprint, ceiling height

  • Attachments. Cable handles clip on with a carabiner, so standard ropes, D-handles, straight and V-bars and ankle straps fit. The All-in-One ships with a lat bar, T-bar and tricep handles; the Dual Stack listing does not list included handles, so ask us what is in the box.
  • Footprint. About 72 by 82 inches for the All-in-One; 62 by 48 inches for the Assisted Chin and Dip. Allow working room in front of a functional trainer for presses and lunges with the handles.
  • Ceiling height. The All-in-One is about 88 inches tall and the Assisted Chin and Dip 91 inches. Check the top pulley position and pull-up bar clearance against your ceiling; a standard 8 ft (96 in) ceiling clears both frames, and chin-ups need head room above the handles. Ask us for the Dual Stack height.
  • Frame and pulleys. Commercial-grade or heavy-duty steel on all three; aluminum pulleys on the Dual Stack. 1-year warranty on all three.

Choosing

Home gym, studio or facility

  • Rack already owned, want cables: the Dual Stack Functional Trainer.
  • Starting from an empty garage: the All-in-One, which covers the rack, the Smith bar and the cables at once.
  • Studio or facility, pull-ups and dips for every level: the Assisted Chin Up and Dip, next to a lat pulldown and the strength machines.
  • Pair with: an adjustable bench from our squat racks and benches for seated cable work.

Stock on these machines moves; a listing marked in stock ships within about 3 business days, a listing you can add to cart without an in-stock badge is on backorder from the supplier (ask us for the current lead time before you order), and a sold-out listing can be reserved by email.

All three ship by freight on a pallet and need two people and basic tools to assemble. Ask us about inside delivery and assembly.

FAQs

What does a functional trainer do?

It gives you two independent cable columns with pulleys that slide from floor to overhead, so presses, pulls, rows, flies, curls, rotations and single-arm work all run on one frame.

How much does a functional trainer cost?

Here, $2,999 for the SFE Dual Stack Functional Trainer and $3,499 for the All-in-One with a power rack and Smith bar, with free freight to domestic USA addresses in the lower 48.

Is it worth getting a functional trainer?

If you want cable work at many heights and angles from one footprint, yes; it covers what would otherwise take a crossover, a pulldown and a low row. If you only need pulldowns and rows, a dedicated lat pulldown and low row station costs less.

What is the best functional trainer for home?

With a rack already in place, the Dual Stack Functional Trainer. Without one, the All-in-One, which adds a rack and Smith bar for $500 more.

What pulley ratio should I look for?

2:1 for full-range cable work with fine weight steps (the Dual Stack); 1:1 when you want the pin number at the handle, as on the Assisted Chin Up and Dip.

How does an assisted pull up machine work?

You kneel on a pad connected to the weight stack; the weight you pin is lifted for you, so a 50 lb pin takes 50 lb off your body weight on each chin-up or dip. More pin, more help.

How much ceiling height does a cable machine need?

The All-in-One is about 88 inches and the Assisted Chin and Dip 91 inches tall, so both clear a standard 8 ft ceiling; allow head room for chin-ups. Ask us for the Dual Stack height.

Which of these are in stock?

All three are in stock as of this update; only one Dual Stack unit remains. Stock on these machines moves; a listing marked in stock ships within about 3 business days, a listing you can add to cart without an in-stock badge is on backorder from the supplier (ask us for the current lead time before you order), and a sold-out listing can be reserved by email.
