Bench types

Flat, adjustable, FID, folding and specialty

  • Flat bench. One fixed pad. The simplest and most stable, for flat presses, rows and step-ups.
  • Adjustable (FID) bench. FID stands for flat, incline, decline: the backrest tilts up for incline presses and down for decline work, and the seat adjusts to keep you from sliding. This is the bench most home gyms buy because it covers every pressing angle with dumbbells or a bar.
  • Folding bench. An adjustable bench that collapses for storage. The trade is a lighter frame in exchange for floor space you get back when you are done.
  • Bench press station. A bench with its own uprights and bar catch, so barbell pressing does not need a rack.
  • Specialty benches. Roman chairs for back extensions and ab work, benches with leg extension and preacher curl attachments, and Pilates benches with a padded platform for floor and mat work.

The seven benches

Home folding and adjustable, commercial FID and press stations

WalkingPad Mate FB1 Folding Weight Bench, $129

Incline, flat and decline seat and backrest positions for presses, rows, dumbbell work and sit-ups. One pull folds it to up to 80% smaller to store in a closet, a corner or under furniture, and a built-in strap carries it folded. Reinforced steel frame rated to 880 lb, sweat-resistant multi-layer cushion, padded foot anchor. Black, or Gray and Pink. In stock.

WalkingPad EVO-UB Adjustable Weight Bench, $299 to $399

Twelve positions across incline, flat and decline, plus a preacher curl pad and a plate-loaded leg extension, so presses, sit-ups, glute bridges, curls and leg extensions happen on one frame. Reinforced steel tubing rated to 1,200 lb, textured upholstery over high-density foam, and transport wheels. Basic ($299) and Premium ($399) in Brown or Black; ask us what the Premium adds. In stock.

WalkingPad Mate WB1 Roman Chair, $199

A multi-position bench for back extensions, abdominal work and preacher curls, with an adjustable curl pad, foot anchor and backrest, a reinforced steel frame rated to 880 lb, and storage under the bench. Gold or Silver. In stock.

WalkingPad B2 Pilates Workout Bench, $799

A compact padded platform for Pilates movements and strength exercises in a small room. Dimensions, adjustments and capacity are not yet published; ask us for the specification sheet before you order. In stock.

Sports & Fitness Exchange Adjustable Olympic Incline Decline Bench, $1,499

The commercial FID bench: flat, multiple incline positions and decline on a pin-and-ladder adjustment, a heavy-duty commercial-grade steel frame and tear-resistant, sweat-resistant upholstery. Built to roll into a squat or power rack for barbell pressing and to stand alone for dumbbells. In stock.

Plate Loaded Olympic Bench Press, $796, and Plate Loaded Decline Bench Press, $765

Bench press stations with their own uprights for a free Olympic bar. The Olympic station has a multi-position bar catch and presses flat, incline and decline; the decline station is 64.57 by 74.21 by 69.09 inches and 163 lb. Both 11-gauge steel. Both currently sold out, so they are hidden from the grid and the compare table; email us to reserve the next units.

What to compare

FID positions, capacity, footprint, attachments

  • FID positions. The EVO-UB has 12; the FB1 adjusts incline, flat and decline with the exact count not published; the SFE FID bench uses a pin-and-ladder with multiple inclines. More positions mean finer steps between angles.
  • Capacity. 1,200 lb on the EVO-UB, 880 lb on the FB1 and WB1; not yet published on the B2 or the SFE benches, so ask us. Capacity is the frame rating for you plus the weight you hold.
  • Footprint and storage. The FB1 folds up to 80% smaller and the EVO-UB rolls on wheels; the SFE benches stay set up. Open dimensions are published only for the decline station, so ask us before ordering for a tight space.
  • Attachments. Preacher curl pad and leg extension on the EVO-UB; curl pad and under-bench storage on the WB1; foot anchors on the FB1 and WB1.
  • Use with a rack. For barbell pressing in a rack or a Smith machine, check bench height and width against the uprights. Racks live on our Squat Racks and Power Racks page.

Choosing

Which bench fits your room

  • Apartment or shared room, store it after: the Mate FB1 folding bench at $129.
  • One bench for presses, curls and leg extensions: the EVO-UB.
  • Back extensions and core work: the Mate WB1 Roman Chair, beside either bench.
  • Pilates and floor work on a padded platform: the B2.
  • Garage gym with a rack, or a commercial floor: the SFE Adjustable Olympic Incline Decline Bench for barbell and dumbbell pressing, with a rack from Squat Racks and Power Racks; add an Olympic or decline press station when they return. More machines on strength training machines and cardio on fitness equipment.

FAQs

Is it worth buying a weight bench?

If you train with dumbbells or a bar at home, a bench is what makes flat, incline and decline presses, rows and supported curls possible. An adjustable bench covers all of those angles in one piece; the FB1 starts at $129.

What is the best weight bench for home use?

For most rooms, an adjustable FID bench. The EVO-UB has 12 positions and a 1,200 lb rating; the FB1 folds away and is rated to 880 lb. With a rack in the garage, the SFE FID bench.

What is an FID bench?

A flat, incline, decline bench: the backrest adjusts above and below flat. The EVO-UB, the FB1 and the SFE Adjustable Olympic Incline Decline Bench are all FID benches.

Should I buy the commercial FID bench or a folding bench?

The SFE FID bench ($1,499) is a heavy-duty commercial frame with a pin-and-ladder adjustment that stays set up and rolls into a rack for barbell pressing. The Mate FB1 ($129, 880 lb) and EVO-UB ($299 to $399, 1,200 lb) suit dumbbell work in a room where the bench is stored after training.

How much weight can these benches hold?

1,200 lb on the EVO-UB, 880 lb on the Mate FB1 and Mate WB1. Capacities for the B2 and the SFE benches are not yet published; ask us.

What is a Roman chair used for?

Back extensions, with your hips on the pad and feet under the anchor, plus sit-ups and ab work. The Mate WB1 adds an adjustable preacher curl pad.

How do the benches ship?

Free to domestic USA addresses in the lower 48; Alaska and Hawaii by quote. WalkingPad benches ship boxed for home assembly; the SFE benches ship by freight, curbside.
