The technology
How a HIFU machine lifts skin
HIFU focuses ultrasound energy to a precise depth below the skin, where it creates tiny points of heat (thermal coagulation points) without affecting the surface. At 1.5 to 4.5 mm the energy reaches the dermis and the SMAS (superficial musculoaponeurotic system), the connective layer that surgeons tighten during a face lift. The heated tissue contracts immediately and then rebuilds collagen over three to six months, which is where the lifting result comes from. Deeper cartridges (6 to 16 mm) target subcutaneous fat for body contouring.
What 3D, 4D, 5D, 7D and 12D mean
The "D" labels are marketing shorthand from the manufacturers, not a measurement. In practice they describe how many lines the handle emits per shot and how the cartridges are configured. Single-line HIFU (the original Ultherapy-style approach) places one line of points per shot and needs manual repositioning. The Winkonlaser 3D and 4D systems emit 11 lines at once (the 4D mode adds higher shot capacity per cartridge), 5D adds a third handle for body and intimate-area work, and 12D refers to a gentler multi-line handle with 360-degree annular cartridges. A 7D label on a consumer-grade unit means the same thing a 4D does on another brand. Compare lines per shot, cartridge depths and shots per cartridge instead of the number.
HIFU plus ice
Several Winkonlaser systems pair HIFU with a cooling step to reduce discomfort and swelling and speed recovery, which the manufacturer markets as HIFU + Ice. Clients still feel heat and pressure during a session, so a topical anesthetic is common for full-face work.
