Health Trackers

Two Hume Health trackers that share one free app: the Hume Pod body composition scale ($229), a smart scale with foot and hand sensors that reads weight and body composition by 8-frequency bioelectrical impedance, with segmental readings for each arm, the trunk and each leg; and the Hume Band 2.0 ($249), a screen-free wrist tracker that records heart rate, heart rate variability, overnight blood oxygen and skin temperature, sleep stages and activity on a charge that lasts up to 14 days. Neither needs a subscription. The guide lists what each one measures, how the Hume Health app and its optional Premium tier work, battery and charging, how many people can share a scale, and who buys which. We describe measurements as measurements: the devices report numbers, and we make no health verdicts about them. Free shipping to domestic USA addresses in the lower 48.

Hume Pod

The smart body composition scale, $229

The Hume Pod (Hume has also sold it as the Body Pod) is a body composition scale with a handle. You stand on four weight sensors and hold a hand grip with electrodes, so the 8-frequency bioelectrical impedance (BIA) signal runs through the arms as well as the legs. That is what makes segmental readings possible: separate figures for the right and left arm, the trunk and the right and left leg.

What each scan reports: weight (9 to 400 lb in 0.1 lb steps), BMI, body fat percentage, fat mass, muscle mass, skeletal muscle mass, visceral fat, total, intracellular and extracellular water, protein, bone mineral content, basal metabolic rate and heart rate during the scan, plus the segmental breakdown.

Hardware: 12.7 by 12.7 by 1.1 inches, a 2.8-inch display, Bluetooth, and a rechargeable lithium-ion battery that Hume states lasts up to a year per charge on average. Hume states up to 24 user profiles, each with its own Hume account. 1-year warranty from Hume Health.

How BIA readings behave: body composition figures from any BIA scale are estimates calculated from electrical impedance, height, age and sex. They shift with hydration, meals, exercise and time of day, so the useful number is the trend from scans taken under the same conditions, for example first thing in the morning before eating.

Hume Band 2.0

The screen-free wrist tracker, $249

The Hume Band 2.0 has no screen. An optical sensor with 5 LEDs and 4 photodiodes sits against the wrist, and the Band sends its readings to the Hume Health app over Bluetooth Low Energy.

What it records: heart rate, heart rate variability, resting heart rate, overnight blood oxygen (SpO2), overnight skin temperature, sleep stages, steps, distance, and active and total calories. The app turns these into sleep, strain and recovery scores.

Hardware: up to 14 days per charge, USB-C charging, IP68 water and dust rating, and a soft woven knit strap that adjusts to the wrist. Works with iOS and Android. Hume does not state a warranty term on this listing; ask us.

Because it has no display, you read everything in the app; the Band is built to be worn day and night and forgotten about, not glanced at.

App and subscription

What is free, what is optional

  • The app is free and required. Both devices pair with the Hume Health app (iOS and Android). The Pod needs the app to weigh in and show results; the Band has no screen, so the app is where you see its data.
  • No subscription is required. You can buy either device and use its measurements with no monthly fee. Hume offers an optional paid Premium tier in the app; its price and contents are set by Hume and can change, so check the app before you decide.
  • Syncing. Hume states the Pod syncs with Apple Health and Google Health Connect, and the Band with Apple Health and Google Fit (we are not affiliated with Apple or Google).
  • One app, both devices. If you own both, the Pod and the Band both report into the Hume Health app, so scale readings and wrist readings are in one place.
  • Sharing a scale. Each person who uses the Pod sets up their own Hume account; Hume states up to 24 profiles per scale. The Band is one person per band.

Choosing

Scale, band or both

  • You want weight and body composition numbers, with arm, trunk and leg figures: the Hume Pod, $229.
  • You want heart rate, HRV, sleep and activity data from something worn 24 hours a day with no screen: the Hume Band 2.0, $249.
  • You want both sets of numbers in one app: both, $478 together.
  • A household: one Pod for everyone (up to 24 profiles) and a Band per person who wants wrist data.

Stock moves: a listing marked in stock ships within a few business days, a listing you can still add to cart without an in-stock badge is on backorder from the supplier (ask us for the lead time before you order), and a sold-out listing drops out of the grid and the compare table, so email us if a model you saw here is missing.

FAQs

Is there a monthly fee for Hume Body Pods?

No. The Hume Pod and the Hume Band 2.0 work with the free Hume Health app and no subscription is required. Hume offers an optional paid Premium tier in the app.

Can two people use the same Hume Body Pod?

Yes. Each person sets up their own Hume account, and Hume states up to 24 user profiles per scale.

Does the Hume Body Pod actually work?

It measures what a BIA scale measures: weight on four sensors and electrical impedance at 8 frequencies through foot and hand electrodes, from which it calculates body composition figures. Those figures shift with hydration and time of day, so compare scans taken under the same conditions.

How much does the Hume Band app cost?

The Hume Health app is free. No subscription is required to use the Band; an optional paid Premium tier is available in the app at Hume's current price.

Is a smart weight scale accurate?

Body weight on a good scale is a direct measurement. Body fat, muscle and water figures are BIA estimates, and they are most useful as a trend from scans taken at the same time of day under the same conditions.

How long do the batteries last?

The Hume Band 2.0 lasts up to 14 days per charge and charges by USB-C. The Hume Pod uses a rechargeable lithium-ion battery that Hume states lasts up to a year per charge on average.

Why does the Hume Pod have a handle?

The hand grip adds electrodes for the upper body, so the scale can report segmental readings for each arm, the trunk and each leg instead of a foot-to-foot estimate only.

Are the Hume Pod and Hume Band in stock?

Every product on this page was in stock when this guide was written. Stock moves: a listing marked in stock ships within a few business days, a listing you can still add to cart without an in-stock badge is on backorder from the supplier (ask us for the lead time before you order), and a sold-out listing drops out of the grid and the compare table, so email us if a model you saw here is missing.
