Two formats

Mouthpieces vs light therapy toothbrushes

A mouthpiece (BioLight Guardian, Guardian+) is a flexible BPA-free tray lined with LEDs. You bite down, start the timer and the LEDs sit against the gums and teeth on both arches at once. Sessions are 5 to 16 minutes and the device is used in addition to brushing.

A light therapy toothbrush (BioLight Illume, Therasage TheraSmile) is a sonic toothbrush with LEDs in the head. It adds light to the brushing you already do, two minutes twice a day, with no extra session. The Illume runs 31,000 to 40,000 vibrations per minute, five modes, a 90-day battery and IPX7 waterproofing.

Buy the mouthpiece for a dedicated oral session; buy the toothbrush if the only routine you will keep is brushing. Many people run both.

Wavelengths

Red, near infrared and blue in the mouth

  • 630 nm red: the core wavelength, used for gum tissue. On all four devices.
  • 850 nm near infrared: reaches deeper tissue below the gum line. On the Guardian and Guardian+.
  • 460 nm blue: used for surface bacteria and brightness. On the Guardian+ and the Illume toothbrush.

The Guardian+ is the only device with all three; it has three settings, a 5-minute timer and ships with three mouthpiece sizes. Stated irradiance is published for the Guardian (65 mW/cm2).

Research on oral photobiomodulation covers gum health and comfort after dental work in small studies. The devices here are sold as oral care accessories; they are not treatments for gum disease and do not replace cleanings. If you are researching the topic, our blog covers red light therapy for gums.

FAQs

Which oral red light device should I buy?

For a dedicated session, the BioLight Guardian ($239) or Guardian+ ($319, adds blue). If you will only keep up brushing, the BioLight Illume toothbrush ($209) adds red and blue light to the brushing you already do.

Do these devices treat gum disease?

No. They are oral care accessories using wavelengths studied for gum comfort and health, not treatments, and do not replace dental cleanings or care. See your dentist for gum disease.

How long is a session?

The Guardian runs a 16-minute session, the Guardian+ a 5-minute timer; light toothbrushes add light to normal two-minute brushing.

What is the blue light for?

460 nm blue is used for surface bacteria and brightness. It is on the Guardian+ and the Illume toothbrush.

Is red light safe in the mouth?

The mouthpieces are BPA-free and the LEDs run at low intensity for short timed sessions. Follow the listing; do not look directly at the LEDs.

Does red light whiten teeth?

Red light is not a whitening treatment. The blue light on the Guardian+ and Illume is used alongside brushing for brightness, not as a bleaching system.
