Three types

Motorized, curved self-powered, and walking pads

Motorized treadmills

A motor drives the belt at a set speed and incline; you keep up. The format for programmed workouts, incline walking and steady runs. SFE Treadmill Pro (3.0 HP, 12.5 mph, 15 percent incline, 58 by 20 inch belt, folds, 300 lb, $1,199), X19 Commercial Touchscreen (3.0 HP rated, 19-inch screen, 12 mph, 20 percent incline, 396 lb, $999), Elite Pro (3.5 HP, 14 mph, 15 percent, 60 by 21 inch belt, $1,799), Commercial Pro (4 HP, 15 mph, 20 percent incline and 3 percent decline, 64 by 24 inch belt, 400 lb, $2,999).

Curved self-powered treadmills

No motor: the curved slat belt moves as fast as you push it and stops when you stop, which burns more energy per mile, suits sprint intervals and sled-style pushes, and needs no outlet. SFE Air Runner Pro (7 resistance levels, $1,999) and Curved Air Runner Elite Pro with sled push ($2,199), MedEq R1000 ($3,250) and R2000 solid wood frame ($3,450). The "manual treadmill" most people search for.

Walking pad

A flat, low-profile belt for walking under a desk. MedEq R500 ($599): folds flat, compact, up to about 2 mph for working hours.

Specs

What to compare on a treadmill

  • Motor. Continuous horsepower is the number that matters (3.0 to 4 HP here). Peak figures (the X19's 7.0 HP peak) are marketing.
  • Speed and incline. 12 to 15 mph tops; 15 to 20 percent incline for hiking-style work; the Commercial Pro adds 3 percent decline.
  • Belt size. 58 by 20 inches is enough for walking and jogging; 60 by 21 or 64 by 24 suits runners and taller users.
  • Capacity. 300 to 400 lb on the motorized units; check the listing on curved units.
  • Footprint. About 80 by 35 inches for the home treadmills, 84 to 89 by 36 for the commercial units; the Treadmill Pro and Elite Pro fold.
  • Console. The X19 has a 19-inch touchscreen with 8 programs; the Pro and Elite Pro have Bluetooth audio; none needs a subscription.
  • Curved units. Compare resistance levels (7 on the Air Runner Pro), slat cushioning and frame material (steel vs the R2000's wood).

Choosing

Which treadmill to buy

  • Walking and jogging at home under $1,200: Treadmill Pro (folds) or the X19 if you want the big screen.
  • Running and incline training: Elite Pro, or the Commercial Pro for the widest belt, decline and 400 lb capacity.
  • Gym, studio or team room: Commercial Pro or a curved Air Runner for group sessions and sprints.
  • No outlet, sprint work, lowest maintenance: a curved self-powered unit; the Elite Pro adds a sled push mode.
  • Desk walking: the R500 Walking Pad.

Motorized treadmills ship mostly assembled on a pallet; allow 7 feet of clearance behind the unit and a dedicated outlet. Curved treadmills are heavy (check the listing) and need two people to move.

FAQs

What is a curved treadmill?

A self-powered treadmill with a curved slat belt that moves as fast as you push it, with no motor or outlet. It burns more energy per mile and suits sprints and intervals. Four here from $1,999.

Is a manual treadmill the same as a curved treadmill?

In practice yes; the curved self-powered treadmills are what most people mean by manual. There are no flat manual treadmills here.

How much motor horsepower do I need?

3.0 HP continuous for walking and jogging, 3.5 to 4 HP for daily running or heavier users. The SFE units run 3.0 to 4 HP.

Do you sell a walking pad?

Yes: the MedEq R500 Walking Pad Treadmill ($599), an under-desk unit that folds flat.

Which treadmill is best for a gym?

The SFE Commercial Pro (4 HP, 15 mph, 20 percent incline, 400 lb) for motorized, or the Curved Air Runner Elite Pro for self-powered group training.

Do these treadmills need a subscription?

No. The SFE treadmills run their programs and Bluetooth audio without one.
