Compare what you'd spend on a gym membership with the one-time cost of home equipment, and see the month your home gym pays for itself. Part of our free calculators and tools.
How it works
- Membership cost each month = dues × members + travel cost per visit × visits per week × members × 52 ÷ 12. The sign-up fee is added in month 1 and the annual fee at the start of each year.
- Home gym cost = equipment price up front + yearly upkeep spread across the months.
- Break-even is the first month when total membership spending passes total home gym spending.
- Dues presets: the 2024 US average of $69 a month and the median of $38, from the Health & Fitness Association's consumer report, and a budget gym from $15 a month (Planet Fitness Classic).
